Whether you’ve experienced a single traumatic incident or ongoing emotional pain, EMDR can help you break free from the past and feel more grounded, calm, and in control of your present. Many clients find EMDR to be a transformative experience, which can relieve years of emotional pain in a relatively short amount of time. It is endorsed by leading organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and NICE (the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) for the treatment of trauma-related conditions, big and small.
EMDR therapy is a well-established approach for treating trauma on an individual level, but it also offers unique benefits in group settings. With the right structure, EMDR in a group setting fosters a shared healing space, helping participants feel connected, validated, and less alone. Group EMDR therapy is particularly impactful for those who have faced trauma, allowing them to witness others’ journeys and benefit from collective support.
What is EMDR THERAPY: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing
When we experience a traumatic or overwhelming event, the brain sometimes gets “stuck.” Instead of storing the memory like a normal event in long-term memory, it remains unprocessed — carrying the same emotions, body sensations, and negative beliefs that were present at the time.
That’s why even years later, certain triggers — a sound, a smell, a look on someone’s face — can feel as if the past is happening all over again. EMDR helps the brain reprocess those “stuck” memories so that they lose their intensity. The memory doesn’t disappear, but the emotional charge fades.
How does EMDR work?
EMDR is a process called bilateral stimulation — involving eye movements, tapping, or gentle sounds — while you recall parts of a memory. This dual focus (memory + stimulation) allows the brain to do what it naturally does during REM sleep: process and file away experiences. We can also work directly on dreams to access the unconscious and promote healing.
As reprocessing takes place, many clients notice:
What happens in a session?
I always tailor the sessions to your specific needs and use the standard EMDR model, which follows an 8-phase structure. Here’s what to expect:
